In January 2022, SCHC launched a mobile health van to cater to the needs of Scarborough residents who face challenges in accessing traditional healthcare services or specific locations. The pandemic lockdowns and extreme weather conditions make it difficult for residents to attend appointments. Families facing economic challenges find it hard to make ends meet. The van is wheelchair-accessible and stocked with essential items, personal hygiene supplies, harm reduction material, medical equipment, and PPE. In addition, the staff can bring in specialists such as mental health counsellors or chiropodists to the neighbourhoods and assist residents in finding a family doctor and navigating the healthcare system.
Services include:
-Hepatitis C (testing and treatment)
-Harm Reduction (Naloxone, Safe Supplies, Condoms)
-Mental Health (Referrals to services, healthcare navigation, goal planning)
-Diabetes (Review of risk factors, Nutrition, signs and symptoms considerations)
-Primary care (routine health checks and diagnostics)
